A Special Place In Hell

“There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”

– Madeline Albright, first female United States Secretary of State

It would seem most of us are going to that special place if the illustrious former Secretary of State was correct. We have turned on each other in ways that I have not before seen in my lifetime. The apathy is astonishing. As far as I can tell, the women’s movement is near death and if we don’t do something soon we risk losing all the progress we have made in at least the past 30 years.

As a women who came of age in the 80’s, I am saddened that the world my daughter faces as she reaches puberty is so similar to the one I entered at her age. Not much of anything has changed. Women are still objectified, belittled, and betrayed by the media. We are still being taught that our real value lies in our sex appeal and nothing else. Women around the world are still being sold into slavery, stoned, mutilated and murdered daily.

Like many other women, the urgency of the situation was brought home to me by the circus of sexism that comprised our recent elections. I can hardly believe there are so many women out there who are still blind to it and oblivious to the danger it poses to them and their mothers, sisters and daughters.

In my own small way, I hope to provide some thought provoking ideas on politics and feminism as I explore the state of these issues in America today.
